Kashan Rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, is one of the great names in Persian weaving. Kashan rugs are admired for their deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion that suits both traditional and modern rooms.
What makes a Kashan rug
- Its history. Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height.
- The design. The classic Kashan layout is a central medallion with matching corner pieces, set in a field of flowers and vines and framed by several borders.
- The weave. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, on a cotton foundation, with a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly.
- The wool. Many Kashans use soft, lustrous wool, and some fine pieces include silk.
Where a Kashan rug works best
A Kashan is a natural choice for a formal living or dining room, where its medallion can sit at the centre of the room. Deep red and navy pieces feel warm and traditional, while ivory and pastel Kashans suit lighter, modern interiors.
