Heriz Rugs
Heriz rugs are woven in villages near the town of Heriz in north-west Iran. They are recognised by their large, angular medallions and strong colours, and by a heavy, dense weave that stands up to busy family rooms and hallways for decades.
How to recognise a Heriz rug
- The medallion. A large, angular central medallion, often with stepped or hooked edges, rather than the curving medallions of city rugs.
- The colours. Brick and rust reds, deep blue and ivory are typical, often with soft changes of shade from small dye batches.
- The weave. Heriz weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot on a cotton foundation, packed into a thick, heavy rug. The knotting is coarser than a Tabriz or Kashan, which is part of why Heriz rugs are so tough.
- Related weaves. Gorevan and Mehriban are related Heriz-area types that share the bold Heriz look.
