Muted Red Heriz Rug
This muted red Heriz rug measures 280 x 200 cm and is a Persian rug from Iran. Its brick red field holds a large angular medallion in cream, pale blue grey and red, with cream corner pieces and a navy border. The colours are softened, with dusty blues and creams sitting between the reds.
The design up close
The centre of this muted red Heriz rug is a large angular medallion, made of stepped and lobed shapes in brick red, cream and pale blue grey. Its outline is picked out in navy and cream, and small blossoms sit inside the lobes. Cream corner pieces fill the field, each with a stepped shape that points toward the medallion. Its angular centre is the largest shape in the field, so the rug reads as one clear pattern from a distance.
The field is brick red, dotted with small motifs in cream, navy and mauve. Thin cream and red guard stripes frame it, and the border is navy, with a band of small diamonds and rosettes in cream, red and rust. The reds are slightly dulled across the field, which gives the rug the muted look in its name.
What a Heriz rug is
Heriz rugs are woven in villages near the town of Heriz in north-west Iran. They are recognised by their large, angular medallions and strong colours, and by a heavy, dense weave that stands up to busy family rooms and hallways for decades. This muted red Heriz rug follows that pattern, with its angular medallion and red and navy palette. The designs are usually built on a large central shape with corner pieces that echo it, and this rug follows that layout.
How a muted red Heriz rug is made
Our records note that this rug is hand knotted, with each knot tied by hand. Heriz weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot on a cotton foundation, which makes a thick, heavy rug. That is part of why Heriz rugs are so tough.
Sizing it for your room
The 280 x 200 rug covers about 5.6 square metres, a size for a large living room or dining room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m fits along the 280 cm length with roughly 30 cm of rug showing at each end, so the front legs of the sofa and an armchair can rest on the rug around a coffee table.
A dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, leaves roughly 50 cm of rug at each end and 55 cm along each side, so the chairs may sit partly off the rug when pulled back. This muted red Heriz rug suits cream walls and timber floors, where the medallion can sit at the centre of the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Lift the furniture now and then so the rug does not wear in one place.
