Red Heriz Black Star Rug
This red Heriz black star rug is a hand knotted Persian rug made in Iran from wool, and it measures 346 x 265 cm.
The field of this red Heriz black star rug is a brick red, edged by a wide navy border and ivory corners. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The centre of this red Heriz black star rug holds a large star-shaped medallion. Its heart is a navy and black lozenge with cream outlines, and its points reach out in navy and ivory toward the middle of the field. Hooked pendants project from the top and bottom of the star.
Large ivory corners are filled with navy, red and blue motifs, with small hooked shapes and stepped lines. They sit at each corner of the red field and frame the medallion. Across the red ground between the star and the corners, small flowers and leaves appear in cream, blue and gold.
The navy border is wide, with red and cream floral motifs and small rosettes along its edges. Thin cream and red guard lines run along the inside, where the border meets the field.
Heriz rugs and where they are made
Heriz rugs come from villages near the town of Heriz in north-west Iran. They are known for large, angular medallions and strong colours, and for a heavy, dense weave that stands up to busy rooms. Weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot on a cotton foundation.
How a red Heriz black star rug is made
This red Heriz black star rug is hand knotted from wool. Each motif in the star is built from single knots, which gives the navy outlines their stepped, crisp shape. A room-size piece can take a weaver many months, so a rug of this size represents a long stretch of hand work.
Sizing it for your room
At 346 x 265 cm, this red Heriz black star rug covers about 9.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 63 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and armchairs can rest on this red heriz black star rug around a coffee table.
Under an eight-seat dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 53 cm at each end and 82.5 cm along each side, enough for chairs to pull back while they stay on the rug. The brick red suits cream, timber and grey furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
