Red Heriz Tribal Rug
This red Heriz tribal rug is a hand knotted Persian rug made in Iran from lamb wool, and it measures 344 x 260 cm.
The field of this red Heriz tribal rug is a soft burgundy and brick red, with mauve and rose shades across it. Small changes of tone run through the whole rug.
The design up close
A large lozenge medallion fills the centre of this red Heriz tribal rug, with a cream outline and stepped, hooked points. Inside it, rust, navy and cream panels surround a small rosette. Rose and gold pendants hang from its top and bottom points.
The corners are cream panels with rust and red motifs in angular shapes. Small flowers in rose, gold and cream fill the red ground between the medallion and the corners.
The border is wide and maroon, with geometric motifs in cream and red. A narrow stripe in grey and cream separates it from the field.
The outer edge of the border holds a narrow band of small motifs, and a second stripe in grey and plum runs inside it. Along each side, the repeating motifs run in an even line from one corner to the next, which keeps the border steady.
Heriz rugs and where they are made
Heriz rugs are woven in villages near the town of Heriz in north-west Iran. They are known for large, angular medallions and strong colours, and for a heavy, dense weave. Heriz weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot on a cotton foundation, packed into a thick, heavy rug.
How a red Heriz tribal rug is made
This red Heriz tribal rug is hand knotted from lamb wool. Each motif is built from single knots, so the stepped edges of the medallion show as small squares of colour. The shades soften gently from one area to the next.
Its tones are muted and even across the rug, so warm rust and burgundy sit well beside cream or grey walls. A rug of this size fits a lounge with a three-seat sofa and two armchairs, with room for a coffee table in the middle.
Sizing it for your room
At 344 x 260 cm this red Heriz tribal rug covers about 8.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 62 cm of rug showing past each end, enough for the front legs of the sofa and armchairs to rest on it.
Under an eight-seat dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 52 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to pull back while they stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
