Rust Heriz Cream Frame Rug
This rust Heriz cream frame rug is a hand knotted Persian rug made in Iran from wool, and it measures 282 x 225 cm.
The field of this rust Heriz cream frame rug is a deep red, with a cream frame around it and a navy and brown outer border. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
A large star-shaped medallion fills the centre of the red field. Its heart is blue, with four small square lobes at its corners in olive and tan, each outlined in cream. Navy and cream lines run around the points, which reach out toward the corners of the field.
The field around the medallion is covered with small flowers and leaves in blue, cream and green, set on the deep red ground. Hooked pendants reach from the top and bottom points of the star.
The cream frame is the lightest part of the rug. It holds an ivory ground with small red and blue motifs, and in each corner a square panel in blue and orange sits inside a cream scroll. A dark brown and navy border with rows of cream and red motifs surrounds the frame, with a narrow guard line on its inside edge.
Heriz rugs and where they are made
Heriz rugs are woven in villages near the town of Heriz in north-west Iran. They are known for large, angular medallions and strong colours. Heriz weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot on a cotton foundation, packed into a thick, heavy rug.
How a rust Heriz cream frame rug is made
This rust Heriz cream frame rug is hand knotted from wool. Each cream and blue motif is formed by individual knots, so the angled edges of the motifs look stepped. The stepped outlines of the star and its blue centre are built from small blocks of colour, and the cream frame is built the same way, one knot at a time.
Sizing it for your room
At 282 x 225 cm this rust Heriz cream frame rug covers about 6.3 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 31 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa can rest on it.
Under a six-seat dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug leaves roughly 51 cm at each end and 67.5 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to pull back while they stay on the rug. The deep red field suits cream, timber and grey furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
