Red Heriz Persian Rug
This red Heriz Persian rug is a hand knotted rug made in Iran from wool, and it measures 408 x 304 cm.
The field is a soft brick red with mauve and rose shades, and small changes of tone run across the whole rug. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
A large lozenge medallion sits at the centre, with a cream outline, a navy and rose inner band, and a central panel of blue and rust with a small rosette. Its pointed ends reach toward the top and bottom of the field, where small rose and gold pendants hang.
The corners of this red Heriz Persian rug are cream, with rust and red motifs in angular, stepped shapes. Small flowers in rose, gold and cream fill the red ground between the medallion and the corners.
The border is wide and dark maroon, with geometric motifs in cream, red and plum. A narrow inner stripe in grey and cream separates it from the field, so the medallion reads clearly against the border.
Around the central rosette, the inner panels are edged with navy and cream stepped lines, and the field beyond them carries small blossoms in rose and gold. Near the edges, the red ground meets the cream corners, so the field has a clear boundary.
Heriz rugs and where they are made
Heriz rugs are woven in villages near the town of Heriz in north-west Iran. They are recognised by large, angular medallions and strong colours, and by a heavy, dense weave. Heriz weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot on a cotton foundation, packed into a thick, heavy rug.
How a red Heriz Persian rug is made
This red Heriz Persian rug is hand knotted from wool, with each knot tied one at a time on a loom. At this size a room-size piece takes a weaver many months, so the rug represents a long stretch of hand work. The shades shift gently from one area of the field to the next, so no two patches look identical.
Sizing it for your room
At 408 x 304 cm this red Heriz Persian rug covers about 12.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 94 cm of rug showing past each end, enough for the sofa, armchairs and a coffee table to sit on the rug together.
Under an eight-seat dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 84 cm at each end and 102 cm along each side, so chairs can be pulled out while they still stand on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
