Royal Blue Kashan Rug
This royal blue Kashan rug was hand knotted in Iran in lamb’s wool and measures 436 x 294 cm, about 12.8 square metres. It is double knotted, and our records note vegetable dyes. A navy field fills the centre, with a red medallion set in it and red corner pieces in each corner, all framed by a wide red border.
The design up close
The navy field is covered in small flowers, leaves and curling stems in red, cream, yellow, olive and pale blue. At its centre a red medallion, edged in cream, holds a smaller cream and blue-grey motif, and slim red pendants hang from its top and bottom points. Corner pieces in red and cream, with pale blue rosettes, repeat the medallion in each corner of the field.
The main border is red, with cream and grey-blue vine scrolls running around its length. Narrow cream and grey stripes separate the border from the field and from the outer edge, so the eye moves from the blue centre outward through each band in turn. This royal blue Kashan rug is a dense pattern, with very little plain ground showing.
A short cream fringe shows along the bottom end, while the long sides finish flat against the outer red border. Across this royal blue Kashan rug, the navy ground stays dense up to the red border, apart from the cream corners.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, is admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This royal blue Kashan rug keeps that layout, with a navy field and a central medallion.
How a royal blue Kashan rug is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, one at a time. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical Persian knot, on a cotton foundation, with a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. This rug is double knotted from lamb’s wool, so the small flowers stay crisp across the field.
Sizing it for your room
At 436 x 294 cm this royal blue Kashan rug suits a formal living room or a large dining room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 108 cm of rug showing at each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on the rug around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 98 cm at each end and 97 cm along each side. Cream, grey and timber furniture sit well against the navy field.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
