Blue Kork Kashan Persian Rug
This blue Kork Kashan Persian rug is a hand knotted rug from Iran, woven in wool and measuring 354 x 260 cm. An ivory oval medallion sits at the centre of a sage green field, and a wide sage green border surrounds it. Blue grey and lilac flowers run through both the medallion and the ground, so the rug reads as soft and light from across the room.
The design up close
The medallion is an oval of ivory with a scalloped outline. Its centre is a star shape in blue grey with a pale blue rosette at its heart, and the flowers inside it are drawn in blue, lilac and cream. Around it, the sage green field carries a finer pattern of small flowers and vines, so the ground stays busy.
The border is a broad sage green band with small flowers in blue grey, cream and a little lilac. Narrow guard lines in cream and blue grey frame both edges of it, and the corners carry the same flowers, so the frame looks continuous around the rug.
Kashan and its weaving
Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan in central Iran, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. The classic Kashan layout is a central medallion with matching corner pieces, set in a field of flowers and vines and framed by several borders. This blue Kork Kashan Persian rug follows that layout, with its oval medallion and flower-filled field.
How a blue Kork Kashan Persian rug is made
Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, and the pile is then trimmed level. The design shows on the back too, with small irregularities from hand knotting.
Sizing it for your room
At 354 x 260 cm, this blue Kork Kashan Persian rug covers about 9.2 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 67 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, there is roughly 57 cm of rug at each end and about 80 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your blue Kork Kashan Persian rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
