Pale Kashan Persian Rug
This pale Kashan Persian rug is hand knotted in Iran from wool, and it measures 403 x 293 cm. Its cream ground is covered with fine blue, navy and rust vines and flowers, so the pale Kashan Persian rug suits a light, traditional room.
The design up close
Across this pale Kashan Persian rug, a soft centre medallion sits faintly in pale grey-blue and tan at the middle of the cream field, with stems and flower sprigs spreading out from it. Blue-grey and navy vines curl through the field, carrying small rust, ivory and dusty pink blossoms, and tan leaves sit between them. The pattern is spread evenly across the field, so no single area dominates. Small rust and blue flowers sit close to the medallion, so the centre reads as a softer, slightly busier area.
The field is framed by a cream guard band, then a wide gold-yellow border with brown, rust and navy flowers on vines. Fringe shows along the short ends. The pale field and the gold border give the rug a light, warm edge.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. Many Kashans use deep reds and navy blues, with curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This pale Kashan Persian rug keeps the classic layout of a central medallion in a field of flowers and vines, in cream and muted tones. Kashan workshops have long been known for flowers and vines across the field, and this rug follows that tradition.
How this pale Kashan Persian rug is made
Every Kashan rug in this collection is hand knotted in Iran, and this rug is double hand knotted in pure wool. Our records note German dyes. Kashans are usually tied with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot on a cotton foundation, which gives a short, dense pile that shows fine flower detail.
Sizing it for your room
At 403 x 293 cm the pale Kashan Persian rug covers about 11.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 92 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa can rest on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 82 cm at each end and 97 cm along each side. The cream ground suits pale timber, soft grey walls and blue or sage furnishings. A rug of this size suits a living room or a formal dining space where the centre can be seen from the doorway.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
