Deep Red Kashan Goli Rug
This deep red Kashan Goli rug is a hand knotted Persian rug from Kashan in central Iran, woven in wool on a cotton base and measuring 417 x 300 cm. Its deep red field carries a central indigo medallion, and a navy border with cream and lilac vines frames the whole piece. The colours are strong and the layout is formal, so it suits a large living room where the medallion can sit at the centre.
The design up close
It carries an all-over floral pattern of blossoms, leaves and vines in cream, blue, lilac and pale gold. The central medallion is indigo with a cream diamond at its heart, and the flowers run up to its lobed edge. Cream corner pieces sit in the corners of the field.
The border is deep navy with a band of cream and lilac vines and flowers, set between several narrow guard stripes in red, cream and lilac. Among handmade traditional rugs, this combination of navy border and red field is an easy one to read at a distance. The outer edge is a thin red line that finishes the rug neatly.
Kashan and its weaving
Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. Kashan rugs are admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This deep red Kashan Goli rug carries all of those, with its deep red field, navy border and central medallion.
How a deep red Kashan Goli rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed level. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. The back carries the same design, with small irregularities that come from hand knotting.
Sizing it for your room
At 417 x 300 cm, this deep red Kashan Goli rug covers about 12.5 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 99 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, there is roughly 89 cm of rug at each end and about 100 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your deep red Kashan Goli rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
