Red Kashan Shad Sar Rug
This red Kashan Shad Sar rug was double hand knotted in Iran from lamb handspun wool and silk, and measures 222 x 145 cm. Its dark red field holds a navy outlined diamond medallion, and a burgundy and navy border with blue grey and gold guard lines frames it.
The design of this red Kashan Shad Sar rug
A diamond medallion sits at the centre of the field, outlined in navy, with a cream and pale blue centre. Above and below it, smaller navy shapes with cream motifs repeat the pattern. Across the dark red field, flowers and vines in cream, gold, blue, green and pale pink spread from the medallion toward the edges.
The border is burgundy and navy, with cream, gold and blue flower heads set between vines. Two narrow lines in blue grey and gold separate the border from the field, and a fringe runs along both short ends.
This red Kashan Shad Sar rug has a dense, traditional look that suits a formal room.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, is admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. The classic layout is a central medallion with matching corner pieces, set in a field of flowers and vines and framed by several borders. This red Kashan Shad Sar rug keeps that layout in a deep red field.
Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, on a cotton foundation, with a short, dense pile. Some fine pieces include silk, and this one is woven from lamb wool and silk, so the flowers and stems have a fine sheen.
How this rug is made
Our records note double hand knotting, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. Silk adds sheen and fine detail, while the lamb wool gives the pile its body and soft hand.
This red Kashan Shad Sar rug was built one knot at a time, so its navy outlines and cream motifs keep their shape. A dark red Persian rug like this one is a considered piece for a room used every day.
Sizing it for your room
At 222 x 145 cm this red Kashan Shad Sar rug covers about 3.2 square metres, a size that suits a seating group in a living room or a bedroom beside the bed.
A three-seat sofa is about 2.2 m long, and this rug is 2.22 m long, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. A dark red Persian rug like this one suits cream walls and pale timber, where the deep red stands out.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
