Blue Kashan Persian Rug
This blue Kashan Persian rug was hand knotted in Iran and measures 308 x 197 cm, or about 6.1 square metres. Its navy field carries an all-over pattern of flowers and vines in cream, ivory, pale blue and gold.
The design up close
Curling stems and blossoms cover the navy ground from edge to edge, with a few peach accents among the cream and gold. Larger rosettes sit in a loose column down the centre of the field, and the stems curl around them, so the field has a sense of movement without a single central medallion. The larger rosettes are the easiest points to follow across the field.
On this blue Kashan Persian rug the main border is a broad navy band with a row of cream and gold cartouches set at intervals and joined by pale blue scrolls. Thin cream and pale blue guard stripes separate the border from the field and from the outer edge. From across the room the flowers merge into a soft texture, and up close each blossom has its own colour.
Kashan in central Iran
Kashan, in central Iran, is admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. Kashans are usually finely knotted, with a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly.
How a blue Kashan Persian rug is made
Weavers in Iran tie each knot by hand on a loom, row after row. Turn this blue Kashan Persian rug over and the flowers show on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand knotting leaves. Every rug in our Persian collection was hand knotted in Iran, and this one is too.
Sizing it for your room
At 308 x 197 cm, the rug covers about 6.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 44 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 64 cm at each end and more than 50 cm along each side, so the chairs can slide back. A blue Kashan Persian rug of this size suits a formal living room where the sofa and chairs all sit on it.
The navy ground of this blue Kashan Persian rug suits pale timber floors and cream walls, where the cream and gold flowers stand out. Warm lighting brings out the gold in the flowers, so a lamp near the rug will show it at its best.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
