Bone White Kashan Rug
This bone white Kashan rug is double knotted by hand in Iran from handspun lamb’s wool, and measures 393 x 292 cm. A pale beige field carries a central medallion in gold brown and blue grey, with vines and small flowers in navy and blue spread across it, and a wide border in taupe and cream closes the design.
The design up close
The medallion at the centre is built in layers. It has a pale blue grey core, a ring of gold and rust blossoms, and points at the top and bottom that reach into the field. Above it, a pointed arch rises toward the top of the rug, and the field around it is covered in curling stems, leaves and small flowers drawn in navy, gold and blue.
This bone white Kashan rug has a warm base rather than a stark white, so the navy and blue drawing reads clearly against the beige. The vines are drawn in navy and blue grey, and they stand out against the warm ground of this bone white Kashan rug.
The border is wide and darker than the field. Its taupe and blue grey ground carries cream scrolls, rosettes and leaves, and narrow guard stripes sit between it and the field. Along each side, the scrolls repeat in an even row from one end of the rug to the other.
Kashan and its rugs
Kashan, in central Iran, lies between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted on a cotton foundation. The classic layout is a central medallion in a field of flowers and vines, framed by several borders, and this bone white Kashan rug follows that layout closely.
How a bone white Kashan rug is made
Every knot is tied by hand, and this rug is double knotted as its title records, from handspun lamb’s wool. Our records note vegetable dyes. Handspun yarn varies slightly in thickness, which gives the pile a natural, soft look across the field.
Sizing a bone white Kashan rug
At 393 x 292 cm the rug covers about 11.5 square metres, which makes it a room-size rug for a large living room or dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 87 cm of rug showing past each end, so two armchairs and a coffee table can sit on it together. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm (8 seats) sits on it with roughly 77 cm of rug at each end and 96 cm along each side. The bone white field suits timber floors, cream walls and warm neutral furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
