Blue Kashan Aroos Rug
This blue Kashan Aroos rug is a hand knotted Persian rug from Iran, woven in wool and measuring 347 x 247 cm. Its field is ivory, with a blue grey medallion and blue grey and lilac flowers in the border, so the overall look is pale and calm. It is a Kashan with the classic medallion layout, which suits a formal living room or dining room with pale walls.
The design up close
A central medallion in blue grey, with a cream core, holds the middle of the field. Curving stems and small flowers spread out from it in blue grey, lilac, sage and pale gold, and the same flowers fill the corners.
The border is a broad band in pale blue grey, carrying a row of small flowers in lilac, cream and blue. Narrow guard stripes sit either side of it, and a thin edge finishes the outside. The corners are picked out with the same flowers, so the border turns each corner with the motifs of the field.
The ivory field around the medallion is filled with small flowers on fine curling stems in blue grey and lilac. Across this blue Kashan Aroos rug, the blue grey stays in the medallion and the border, and the field remains ivory.
Kashan and its weaving
Kashan lies in central Iran, between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. The classic Kashan layout is a central medallion with matching corner pieces, set in a field of flowers and vines and framed by several borders. This blue Kashan Aroos rug follows that layout closely.
How a blue Kashan Aroos rug is made
Each knot on this rug is tied by hand on a loom, and the wool pile sits on a cotton foundation. Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. The design shows on the back too, with the small irregularities that come from hand knotting.
Sizing it for your room
At 347 x 247 cm, this blue Kashan Aroos rug covers about 8.6 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 64 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, there is roughly 84 cm of rug at each end and about 79 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your blue Kashan Aroos rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
