Blue Floral Kashan Kork Rug
This blue floral Kashan Kork rug is a hand knotted Persian rug from Iran, woven in wool and measuring 360 x 260 cm. Its ivory field is laid out around a large sage green medallion, with blue and lilac flowers scattered through the vines, and a broad sage green border frames the whole piece. It keeps the classic Kashan layout in calm colours, and it suits a living room with pale walls.
The design up close
A large medallion in sage green sits at the centre of the field, with a smaller blue rosette at its heart. The medallion has a lobed outline, and pale corner shapes in the same green reach into the four corners of the ivory ground. Curling vines in cream, blue and lilac run out from the medallion across the field.
The border is a wide sage green band worked with fine cream vines and small flowers in blue and lilac. A narrow cream guard line sits either side of it, and the corners turn with the same vine pattern.
Kashan and its weaving
Kashan lies in central Iran, between Tehran and Isfahan, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries. Kashan rugs are admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This blue floral Kashan Kork rug keeps the medallion and the flowered borders, but it uses ivory and sage in place of the deeper reds and navy of many Kashans.
How a blue floral Kashan Kork rug is made
Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. This rug is hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on a loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed level. The back carries the same design, with the small irregularities that come from hand knotting.
Sizing it for your room
At 360 x 260 cm, this blue floral Kashan Kork rug covers about 9.4 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 70 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, there is roughly 60 cm of rug at each end and about 80 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your blue floral Kashan Kork rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
