Red Kashan Kork Rug
This red Kashan Kork rug is a hand knotted Persian rug from Iran, woven in wool and measuring 340 x 250 cm. Its red field carries a navy medallion at the centre, with a small cream diamond in the middle of it, and a deep navy border frames the whole piece. It is a classic Kashan layout in two strong colours, so it suits a formal living room or dining room with cream or grey walls.
The design up close
The red field is covered with a fine floral pattern of blossoms, leaves and vines in blue, cream and pale gold. At the centre a navy medallion with a lobed outline holds a small cream diamond with a blue centre, and the flowers of the field run right up to its edge. Cream and pale blue corner pieces sit in the four corners of the navy frame around the field.
The border is deep navy, carrying a band of cream and lilac vines and flowers. Several narrow guard stripes in pale blue, cream and red separate it from the field and from the outer edge.
Kashan and its weaving
Kashan lies between Tehran and Isfahan in central Iran, and its workshops were famous by the 16th and 17th centuries, when Persian court carpets reached their height. Kashan rugs are admired for deep reds and navy blues, curving floral borders and a graceful central medallion. This red Kashan Kork rug has all of them: the deep red field, the navy border and the centre medallion.
How a red Kashan Kork rug is made
Kashan rugs are usually finely knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot, which gives a short, dense pile that shows the detail clearly. This rug is hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on a loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed level. The back carries the same design, with small irregularities that come from hand knotting.
Sizing it for your room
At 340 x 250 cm, this red Kashan Kork rug covers about 8.5 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 60 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, there is roughly 50 cm of rug at each end and about 75 cm along each side, so chairs pulled out from the table stay on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your red Kashan Kork rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
