Suzani Rugs
Suzani rugs borrow their designs from the embroidered textiles of Central Asia, with large, bold floral medallions. Ours are hand knotted in Afghanistan, bringing that embroidered look to a durable wool rug.
From embroidery to rug
Suzani comes from the Persian word for needle. Suzanis are embroidered textiles from Central Asia, especially the region around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan, traditionally made by women as part of a bride’s dowry. Their large rosettes, sun-like discs and flowering vines translate beautifully into a knotted rug.
What to look for
- Bold motifs. Large circular flowers and vines on an open background, rather than small repeating patterns.
- Colour. Reds, oranges and deep blues on ivory or cream are classic, with softer palettes in newer pieces.
- Hand knotting. Unlike the embroidered originals, these rugs are knotted in wool, so they are made to be walked on.
