Cream Suzani Rug
This cream Suzani rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in fine lamb’s wool and measures 273 x 184 cm. The field is pale cream, with flower heads spaced across it in staggered rows, and a wide border runs around the edge.
Its flowers are spread across the whole field, so there is no single focal point.
The design up close
Round flower heads sit in staggered rows across the cream field. Each one has a sage outline and a rust centre, and small sprigs of leaves and buds fill the space between them. This cream Suzani rug has a calm field, so the flower heads read clearly from across a room.
The border is wide and patterned with leaf motifs and small buds, and a narrow stripe separates it from the field. The border motifs sit close together, so the border reads as one continuous band.
Sprigs of leaves in sage and rust sit between the flower heads, and small buds point in several directions.
The border sits close to the field, so the edge of the rug is easy to read from across the room.
A thin cream edge finishes the outside of the border.
Where Suzani designs come from
The Suzani tradition comes from embroidered textiles made in Central Asia, especially around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan. Women traditionally stitched them as part of a bride’s dowry. This cream Suzani rug translates the same large rosettes and flowering vines into knotted wool.
Suzani pieces are knotted to be walked on, so the cream field is built to take foot traffic.
How it is made
This cream Suzani rug is double hand knotted in Afghanistan, so the pattern is formed by knots. It is made from wool and built to be walked on. Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the knot rows shape the edge of every flower head.
The pile is fine lamb’s wool, and the flower heads are knotted into it.
Sizing your Cream Suzani Rug
At 273 x 184 cm the rug covers about 5.0 square metres. A 2.2 m three-seat sofa would leave about 27 cm of rug showing past each end, so the rug can sit under the whole seating group. Around a coffee table, the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can all rest on it.
At the foot of a king bed, 183 cm wide, the rug’s length runs about 45 cm past each side.
Under a 180 x 90 cm dining table it leaves about 47 cm of rug along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
