Red Transitional Suzani Rug
This red transitional Suzani rug was made in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 260 x 180 cm. Its field is a rich red, covered in flowering vines in cream, teal, green and orange. Our listing describes it as double hand knotted.
The design up close
The red field of this red transitional Suzani rug carries an all-over pattern rather than a single centrepiece. Thin cream and teal vines curl across the whole ground, linking large palmettes in sage, grey blue and gold with smaller blossoms in orange, cream and green. The palmettes sit in loose pairs, mirrored left and right, so the field feels balanced without repeating exactly.
A narrow inner stripe separates the field from the border, which carries a chain of small flowers and leaves in teal, cream and gold on the same red. Short white fringes finish both ends. Because the border and field share one red, the rug reads as a single sweep of colour from across a room, and the vines only show their detail up close.
Suzani rugs, from embroidery to the floor
Suzani designs come from embroidered textiles of Central Asia, mainly the region around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan. Those textiles were traditionally made by women as part of a bride’s dowry. The name comes from an old word for needle, a reminder of the stitching behind the originals. Large rosettes, sun-like discs and flowering vines translate well into a knotted rug.
How a red transitional Suzani rug is made
A red transitional Suzani rug is hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and our listing describes this one as double hand knotted. Lamb’s wool forms the pile. Unlike the embroidered originals, a knotted rug is made to be walked on, so the same flowers now take the wear of a family room.
The design shows on the back as well, with small irregularities where each knot was tied by hand.
Sizing it for your room
This 260 x 180 rug covers about 4.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 20 cm of rug past each end, so the sofa and armchairs can be grouped on it. At the foot of a king bed (183 cm wide), it leaves 38.5 cm on each side. This red transitional Suzani rug suits pale walls and timber floors.
In a living room, the longer side of this rug can run along the sofa, which gives the seating area a clear base without covering the whole floor.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Daylight changes how the red reads across the day, so look at the rug near a window before you decide where it should go.
