Cream Floral Suzani Rug
This cream floral Suzani rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 243 x 163 cm. The field is pale cream, with round flower heads scattered across it in a loose grid, and a wide rust red border surrounds it.
The design up close
Across the cream field, round flower heads sit in a loose grid, each one shaded in sage and grey green with a small rust centre. Between them, small sprigs and buds in rust, sage and grey fill the open ground, so the pattern reads as spaced out, with room between the motifs. This cream floral Suzani rug puts most of its detail into the flowers, so they carry the design.
The rust red border is wide and carries cream and sage leaf motifs, pointed palmettes and small buds set close together. A narrow cream stripe separates the border from the field, and a thin rust line runs along the inner edge of that stripe.
Most of the cream field is open ground, so the flower heads and their sprigs stand clearly apart.
The rust border is the most solid colour on the rug, and it runs continuously around all four sides.
A thin cream edge sits outside the rust border, so the rust band is framed on both sides.
Where Suzani designs come from
Suzani designs take their look from embroidered textiles of Central Asia, especially around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan, where women traditionally made them as part of a bride’s dowry. The large rosettes, sun-like discs and flowering vines of those embroideries translate into a knotted rug, and the round flower heads of this cream floral Suzani rug belong to that family of designs.
How it is made
This cream floral Suzani rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan, so its flowers are formed by knots in the pile. Lamb’s wool makes up the pile, and each knot is tied by hand on a loom, one at a time. The rows of knots define the outline of each flower head.
Sizing your Cream Floral Suzani Rug
At 243 x 163 cm the rug covers about 4.0 square metres. Its 2.43 m length puts it in the range where a coffee table can sit in the middle of the rug, with the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs resting on it. In a bedroom, it works at the foot of a king bed, which is 183 cm wide, with about 30 cm of rug showing past each side of the bed.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
