Navy Blue Suzani Rug
This navy blue Suzani rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool and measures 118 x 80 cm. Its blue field is framed by a cream border with red and orange palmette motifs, and the outer edge is a wine red band.
The design up close
The central field of this navy blue Suzani rug is blue, with a small floral motif in red and cream at its centre, drawn with fine pale stems. A wide cream border carries large palmette-like motifs in red, orange and blue, with spiralling scrolls between them.
Suzani designs are usually built around large flowers, and this navy blue Suzani rug keeps that feel on a smaller scale. The motifs are spaced widely, so the field stays open and the pattern reads clearly from the doorway.
Near the edges a narrow wine red band holds small blue and cream flowers. The cream border lifts the blue centre, so the central field stands out clearly even on a timber floor.
Suzani rugs and their roots
Suzani rugs borrow their designs from the embroidered textiles of Central Asia, with large, bold floral medallions. The name comes from an old word for needle, and the embroideries were traditionally made in the region around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan, often by women as part of a bride’s dowry.
Unlike the embroidered originals, this rug is knotted in wool, so it is made to be walked on. Our Suzani rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan.
How a navy blue Suzani rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand, so the design is built up row by row and shows on the back as well as the front. Hand knotting leaves small irregularities in the lines, and those are part of what makes each rug individual. The rug is made from lamb’s wool.
Sizing it for your room
This 118 x 80 rug covers about 0.9 square metres, which makes it a small accent piece. It suits a bedside, an entrance or the space in front of an armchair, where it adds colour without covering much floor. Beside a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, it sits neatly at one side.
Because it is small, this hand knotted blue rug is a simple way to bring colour into a room without covering much floor.
Its cream border frames the blue field on all four sides, so the rug works as a single, complete piece even in a small space. Placed in an entrance, it gives visitors colour straight away without taking up much floor.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this navy blue Suzani rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
