Burgundy Suzani Rug
This burgundy Suzani rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in fine lambswool and measures 119 x 81 cm. The pile is double hand knotted, and our records note natural dyes. Three large medallions stack down a grey-blue field, with a cream border around them.
The design of this burgundy Suzani rug
The centre holds three medallions set one above the other. Each is red and orange with a pale centre, and a lilac-grey panel sits on either side of it. Thin stems and tiny red dots trace the ground between them. The medallions are placed in a straight column, with a lilac-grey panel on either side, so the centre looks symmetrical.
On this burgundy Suzani rug, the border is cream, with small red and green motifs along its edges and red arrow shapes on the outer band. The grey-blue ground is plain enough that the large medallions carry the design. The cream border is the brightest band, and the lilac-grey side panels are the softest tone on the rug.
The three medallions are the largest shapes on the rug, so they set the rhythm for the whole field. The small red and green motifs in the border repeat at regular intervals, so the edges look finished. Thin cream lines separate the field from the border.
Where Suzani rugs come from
Suzani rugs borrow their designs from the embroidered textiles of Central Asia, with large, bold floral medallions. The name comes from a word for needle. The embroidered originals come from around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan, where women traditionally made them as part of a bride’s dowry. This burgundy Suzani rug carries that bold medallion style into knotted wool.
How it is made
This burgundy Suzani rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan from fine lambswool, and the pile is double hand knotted. Our records note natural dyes. Unlike the embroidered originals, these rugs are knotted in wool, so they are made to be walked on.
Sizing it for your room
At 119 x 81 cm this burgundy Suzani rug covers about 1.0 square metre. It is too small for a sofa or a dining setting, so it works best as a bedside rug, inside an entrance or in a hallway. Beside a queen bed, which is 153 cm wide in Australia, its 119 cm length runs alongside the mattress. Set it where the three medallions face the room, so the shapes are the first thing people see. The cream border gives it a clean edge on pale timber or tiles.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
