Beige Suzani Rug
This beige Suzani rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 171 x 120 cm. The ground is a soft taupe, with large floral motifs in cream, rust, red and blue-green and a border of small flowers and vines.
The design up close
Across this beige Suzani rug the field is an open, all-over floral design. Tall flower sprays rise from the top and bottom, built from cream, rust and blue palmette shapes with dark outlines. Pairs of large rosettes sit at mid height on either side of the field, in red, cream and blue-green, and a cream and orange bloom sits near the centre among smaller flowers.
Small cream flowers with red centres and tiny orange blossoms are scattered across the ground, linked by thin stems and vines. The flower sprays carry dark outlines, so each bloom stands apart from the ground even at a distance. The border is cream with small rust and blue flowers, and a narrow stripe runs inside it. Short fringe finishes both ends.
Because the ground of this beige Suzani rug is one warm tone, the flowers read clearly from across the room, and the blue-green accents stand out against the taupe.
The Suzani tradition
The name comes from the word for needle. Suzanis are embroidered textiles from Central Asia, especially the region around Bukhara and Samarkand in today’s Uzbekistan, traditionally made by women as part of a bride’s dowry. Their large rosettes, sun-like discs and flowering vines translate well into a knotted rug, so a beige Suzani rug keeps the embroidery’s bold scale. Suzani rugs borrow their large floral motifs from that tradition, and this rug follows the model with soft, earthy colour.
How a beige Suzani rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, row after row, and the pile is then sheared level. The double knot ties each row firmly, and lamb’s wool gives the surface a soft hand that suits a floral design with fine detail.
Sizing it for your room
At 171 x 120 cm the rug covers about 2.1 square metres, a size that suits a bedroom or a small living room. Laid across the foot of a queen bed, 153 cm wide in Australia, it overhangs the frame by about 9 cm on each side. In a living room, set a beige Suzani rug in front of an armchair so that the chair’s front legs rest on its taupe field and the flowers show clearly around the furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
