Indian Rugs
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary and designer pieces, alongside classic patterns, in wool and wool and silk blends.
What to know about Indian rugs
- Weaving centres. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area in Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India.
- Contemporary design. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
- Materials. Wool is the most common pile. Some rugs mix wool with silk, and some use bamboo silk, a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. Bamboo silk looks beautiful but is softer and less resilient than wool, so it suits lower-traffic rooms.
