Handmade Sky Blue Transitional Rug
The Frosted Lake rug is a sky blue transitional rug, handmade in India from bamboo silk and measuring 300 x 240 cm. That gives you 7.2 square metres of floor, enough to sit under a dining table with the chairs pulled out or to anchor a living room seating group.
The design up close
Colour comes first. Soft sky blue sits in broad clouds across the left side and the lower part of the field, shading into mid grey. Charcoal and near-black patches break up the blue, and ivory lines run through all of it.
The pattern underneath is a classical one: scrolling sprays of flowers and leaves, oval rings of ornament down the middle of the field, and a narrow border of small repeating motifs. Large areas of the design have been worn back, so shapes appear and fade rather than sitting sharply on the ground. That faded treatment is what makes it a transitional rug, a traditional layout presented in a quieter, more modern way.
The border sits close to the edge and is partly lost in the same fading, so field and border merge in places. The ends finish in cream fringe, which frames the darker colours with a light edge.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this sky blue transitional rug is made
This rug is handmade in India from bamboo silk. Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so a rug with it suits rooms with lighter foot traffic. Small differences from one end to the other are normal in a rug made by hand.
As a bamboo silk rug, it is a good fit for a bedroom, a dining room or a living room where people tend to walk around the rug more than across it. Among indian hand made rugs it sits on the modern side, and it works as a modern rug in a calm, light room.
Sizing it for your room
At 300 x 240 cm this sky blue transitional rug suits a living room, a dining room or a main bedroom. Under a queen bed that is 153 cm wide, it leaves 43.5 cm each side of the bed. A king bed at 183 cm wide leaves 28.5 cm each side.
In a living room, a 3-seat sofa about 2.2 m wide leaves 40 cm of rug each side of it. At the dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table that seats six leaves 60 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side, which is about the room a pulled-out chair needs.
Looking after your sky blue transitional rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile.
