Beige Abstract Hall Runner
This beige abstract hall runner was double hand knotted in Jaipur, India, from New Zealand wool and measures 301 x 81 cm. An ivory ground carries charcoal and slate marks at the top, with two soft bands of apricot running across the middle and lower field. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The runner has a mostly ivory ground with a brushed, worn look. Charcoal and grey blue marks gather in the top section in loose blotches, and thin vertical streaks run down from them. Lower in the runner the marks thin out into fine grey lines on the cream.
Two bands of muted apricot cross the runner, one at the middle and another a little lower. Each has a broken edge where the colour fades into the ground, and small touches of grey run along them. Because the colour is spread unevenly, the apricot reads as a brushed stroke rather than a stripe.
The pale ground keeps the runner calm enough for a hallway. This beige abstract hall runner has no border or motif, so the pattern reads as one painted surface from one end to the other.
Indian weaving and abstract designs
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary and designer pieces, and Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and this beige abstract hall runner is made from wool with a modern, painterly design.
How a beige abstract hall runner is made
Double hand knotted means each knot is tied by hand around two warp threads, which gives a firmer, more hard-wearing pile than a single knot. The handspun wool is sheared level once the knotting is finished, so the abstract marks sit evenly across the pile.
Sizing it for your room
At 301 x 81 cm the runner covers about 2.4 square metres. A hallway about 1 to 1.2 m wide suits it, leaving roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side. A beige abstract hall runner of this length suits a straight hallway with a clear run of timber or tiled floor. Keep it clear of stair nosings and doorway thresholds so its edges lie flat.
This beige abstract hall runner also suits a kitchen galley, where the ivory ground sits well beside white or timber cabinetry and the apricot bands add a little warmth.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
