Handmade Sage Green Striped Rug
The Saltbush rug is a sage green striped rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 300 x 236 cm. It covers about 7.1 square metres of floor.
The design up close
The field is a soft sage green that shifts between grey green, pale olive and a light straw tone. Those shifts come as fine streaks, short and long, all running the same way across the whole rug, so the surface looks a little like brushed linen. There is no medallion, no motif and no border. The streaks are the design.
Up close you can see single strands of paler and deeper green sitting side by side in tight, even rows. From across the room they blend, and it reads as a quiet striped rug.
The two long sides are bound in a grey green close to the field colour, and the two ends finish in a short pale fringe. A sage green striped rug like this sits easily with natural timber, white oak, linen, rattan and indoor plants, and it gives a room colour without a busy pattern competing with art or furniture.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this sage green striped rug is made
This rug is handmade from wool. Wool is hard wearing and springy underfoot, so the pile recovers well after people walk across it, and it has a matte finish that keeps the green soft in strong afternoon light.
Turn a corner over and the back is a fine ribbed weave in pale sage, in the same colour family as the front. The slight variation in the yarn tone is what gives the sage green striped rug its depth: a single flat green over 300 cm would look heavy, while these streaks keep it light. As a modern rug it suits a home that leans calm and simple.
Sizing it for your room
At 300 x 236 cm this is a large rug for a living room, dining room or main bedroom. In a living room it can sit in front of a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m with 40 cm to spare beyond each end, and the front legs of the sofa and chairs can rest on it.
Under a 180 x 90 cm dining table it leaves 60 cm at each end and 73 cm along each side, enough for chairs to pull back a little and stay on the rug. Laid across the bed in a main bedroom, its 300 cm length leaves 58.5 cm each side of a king bed, which is 183 cm wide.
Looking after your sage green striped rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
