Grey Checkered Wool Rug
This grey checkered wool rug is hand loomed in India and measures 237 x 162 cm, or about 3.8 square metres. A grid of rectangles in slate grey and blue grey covers the whole surface, with cream lines dividing the blocks.
The design up close
This grey checkered wool rug has no border. Columns of blocks run from the top to the bottom of the rug, and rows of blocks run across, with fine cream lines between them.
Some blocks are solid slate patches, while others hold a row of short cream dashes that look like broken texture. The solid blocks are scattered across the field, so the grid never looks entirely even. The cream dashes are short and even in length, and they sit in horizontal rows inside each block. Where a block is solid, the slate colour looks flat and matte, which sets it apart from the dashed blocks beside it.
Slate grey and blue grey dominate, and cream shows in the dashes and lines. On this grey checkered wool rug the grid stays calm and low in contrast, so it reads more as texture than as a bold pattern.
Where this rug is woven
India has a long rug making tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet making region in India, and workshops there and elsewhere weave many contemporary designs, often to order.
How a grey checkered wool rug is made
This grey checkered wool rug is hand loomed from wool. Our records note vegetable dyes.
Hand loom work leaves small differences in each block, so the solid patches and the dashes never repeat exactly. The tone also shifts a little from one part of the rug to another. Because the blocks repeat across the whole field, a small change in one block is hard to see from the far side of a room.
Sizing it for your room
At 237 x 162 cm this grey checkered wool rug covers about 3.8 square metres. Its 2.4 m length suits a coffee table setting, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around the table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, it leaves roughly 29 cm at each end and 36 cm along each side. Grey and blue-grey furnishings blend into the grid, while cream or timber pieces let the blocks stand out. A room with timber floors and a grey sofa keeps the grid calm, while cream walls give the blocks more contrast.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not catch the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the surface. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
