Charcoal Silver Grass Rug
This charcoal silver grass rug was hand double knotted in India, with a New Zealand wool base, and measures 439 x 300 cm, about 13.2 square metres of floor. Its field is a charcoal grey flecked with silver and white, laid out in long horizontal bands that run the full length of the rug. The result is a calm, understated rug for a contemporary room.
The charcoal silver grass rug up close
Each band is made of fine short dashes, so the surface looks like woven stripes rather than a printed pattern. Some bands are a little paler and carry more silver flecks, while others sit darker and almost solid. Up close you can see the small dashed rows clearly; from further away the whole rug settles into one even, grey tone. The edges are plain with no contrasting border, so the stripes carry right out to the sides. The rug lies flat on a plain floor, and the bands stay level from end to end.
Where it comes from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, and Indian rugs in this style are often made to order in a wide range of colours and sizes. This charcoal silver grass rug belongs to the contemporary side of that range, and its restrained grey palette suits a modern room.
How it is made
Hand knotting means each knot in this charcoal silver grass rug is tied by hand onto the warp threads of the loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed to an even height. Double knotting ties each knot around two warp threads. Turn the rug over and the knots show on the back as a fine, slightly uneven texture, typical of hand work. Its base is New Zealand wool. The stripes come from the way the knots are set row by row, so the pattern depends on the hand work rather than on a printed design.
Sizing it for your room
At 439 x 300 cm this charcoal silver grass rug covers about 13.2 square metres, so it suits a large living room or lounge. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 110 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves about 100 cm at each end and 100 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to be pulled back. Charcoal and silver go well with grey, white or timber furniture, and the rug will not compete with bright art on the walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this charcoal silver grass rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the area under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
