Ivory Grey Grass Rug
This ivory grey grass rug was hand double knotted in India, using New Zealand wool, and measures 295 x 248 cm, about 7.3 square metres of floor. Its ground is a soft ivory, and grey dotted marks run in rows across the whole field, so it reads as a pale, neutral rug with a fine, even texture. It is a plain design, with no border and no central motif.
The ivory grey grass rug up close
Horizontal rows of tiny dark dashes run across the rug, separated by thin bands where the ivory ground shows more clearly. The grey comes mainly from these marks, so from a distance the field looks like soft grey ivory, and up close you can see each row. The rug is close to square, and the rows run straight across to the edges. A short fringe finishes the top and bottom, and there is no contrasting border. The surface looks even from one corner to the other.
Where it comes from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian rugs in a contemporary style are often woven to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. This ivory grey grass rug follows that contemporary style, and its neutral palette suits a bedroom, an office or a living room with modern furniture.
How it is made
Hand knotting means each knot in this ivory grey grass rug is tied by hand onto the warp threads of the loom, row after row, and the pile is then trimmed to an even height. Double knotting ties each knot around two warp threads. Turn the rug over and the knots show on the back as a fine, slightly uneven texture, typical of hand work. The wool is from New Zealand, and the grey marks are formed by the knots themselves rather than printed onto the surface.
Sizing it for your room
At 295 x 248 cm this ivory grey grass rug covers about 7.3 square metres, which suits a living room with a two-seat sofa or a bedroom. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 38 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa stands on the rug. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves about 58 cm at each end and 79 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. Its pale tones lift a room with dark timber.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this ivory grey grass rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the area under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
