Pakistani Rugs
Pakistan is known for finely knotted wool rugs in classic designs such as Bokhara and Jaldar, with rich reds and repeating motifs that work well in traditional and modern rooms alike.
What to know about Pakistani rugs
- Workshops. Hand-knotted rug making grew rapidly in Pakistan after independence in 1947, with Lahore among the early centres.
- Bokhara designs. Rows of octagonal motifs called guls, taken from Turkmen tribal rugs, usually on a red ground. These are often called Bokhara rugs, after the old trading city.
- Persian designs. Pakistani workshops also weave classic Persian medallion and floral designs, often finely knotted in soft wool.
- Finish. Many Pakistani rugs are washed after weaving, which gives the wool a soft sheen.
Where Pakistani rugs work
Their fine knotting and repeating designs make Pakistani rugs a good choice for dining rooms, studies and living rooms, and they offer the look of a fine traditional rug in a wide range of sizes.
