Dark Green Jaldar Rug
This dark green Jaldar rug is hand knotted in Pakistan from wool and measures 308 x 238 cm. Its deep green field is filled with rows of cream-outlined diamonds, each with a small rosette at its centre, and a border of stacked bands in grey, cream and green frames the whole rug.
The design up close
The field of this dark green Jaldar rug is an all-over lattice. Each diamond is outlined in cream and holds a small rosette of grey and cream at its heart. The diamonds are offset from row to row, so each one sits in the gap between two above it, and the dark green shows through every gap, reading as a strong, even net across the rug.
The border is built from several bands. Next to the field a narrow dark stripe leads into a wide band of grey and cream with small zigzag and square motifs, then a thin cream line and narrow bands of green and cream run to the outer edge. The top and bottom have additional striped bands, so the rug reads as a framed panel.
In this dark green Jaldar rug there is no single centre, so the pattern looks balanced from every side of the room. Crisp, even motifs like these are a sign of careful knotting.
Jaldar rugs and the Bokhara family
Jaldar rugs carry an all-over lattice of repeating motifs. The lattice usually frames small diamond or octagonal motifs repeated across the whole field, a layout from the Bokhara family of designs, which draws on Turkmen rugs. Our Jaldar rugs are hand knotted in Pakistan in fine wool, in classic reds as well as black and deeper tones.
How a dark green Jaldar rug is made
Each knot is tied by hand on a loom, and the pile is sheared to an even height. Our records note vegetable dyes. Vegetable dyes can vary a little between batches, so the green may show slight changes between one part of the field and another.
Sizing it for your room
At 308 x 238 cm this dark green Jaldar rug covers about 7.3 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, roughly 44 cm of rug shows at each end, so the whole sofa sits on it while the front legs of the armchairs rest on the wool. A dining table of 240 x 100 cm leaves about 34 cm at each end and 69 cm along each side, enough along the sides for chairs to slide back.
Deep green pairs well with cream walls and timber furniture. This dark green Jaldar rug suits a formal dining room or a living room with timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
