Cream Jalbara Runner
This cream Jalbara runner is a hand knotted runner from Pakistan, made in lamb’s wool and measuring 260 x 78 cm. The field is a deep green, with cream and gold medallions down its length and cream and brown bands in the border. At about 2 square metres it is a narrow runner for a hallway.
The design of this cream Jalbara runner
A column of star-shaped medallions runs down the centre of the green field, each one in cream and gold with brown outlines. On either side of the column, pointed motifs in cream and brown lean in toward the medallions, with small gaps of green between each pair. The field is even and calm, so the medallions carry the whole design. The brown outlines around each medallion are fine, so the pattern reads clearly from a distance.
The border is built from several narrow bands. Nearest the field is a band of small cream and brown geometric blocks, then a plain brown stripe, and then a wider outer band of repeated squares and zigzags. Thin cream and dark lines edge the outside of the runner.
Pakistani rugs and the Bokhara style
Pakistan is known for finely knotted wool rugs in classic designs such as Bokhara and Jaldar. Bokhara designs use rows of octagonal motifs called guls, taken from Turkmen tribal rugs, and these are usually set on a red ground. This runner keeps a column of guls but sets them on a green ground instead.
How it is made
This cream Jalbara runner is hand knotted in lamb’s wool, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. Because the field is dark, the cream and gold medallions stand out clearly from across the room, and the brown outlines keep their edges sharp.
Sizing it for your room
At 260 x 78 cm this cream Jalbara runner covers about 2 square metres. It suits a hallway, a kitchen galley or the floor beside a bed. A hallway about 98 to 118 cm wide leaves roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side. The 260 cm length is short for a long corridor but works in a shorter hall.
The deep green field sits well with pale walls, timber floors and warm neutral furnishings, where the cream medallions give the eye a lighter path down the middle. The runner’s length and width suit a space you walk along, and the pattern stays even from one end to the other.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
A runner in a hallway takes foot traffic along its whole length, so vacuum the full length of this cream Jalbara runner, not just the centre.
