Sea Blue Jaldar Rug
This sea blue Jaldar rug is hand knotted in Pakistan in wool and measures 308 x 201 cm, a generous size for a living room or dining room. The medium blue field is covered in rows of diamond shaped motifs, framed by a wide dark brown border. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The sea blue field is laid out in a grid of diamond shaped guls, each one dark brown outlined in cream with a small cream centre. Smaller cross shaped motifs sit between them in alternate rows, so the pattern repeats evenly from one end of the field to the other.
The border is a wide band of dark brown, with small cream and brown geometric motifs in rows and a thin pale blue line between the border and the field. Stripes and short fringe finish both ends.
The guls are angular, with straight sides, not the rounder shapes of Bokhara guls. Together with the wide border, this sea blue Jaldar rug has a formal, balanced look.
Jaldar rugs and where they come from
Jaldar rugs carry an all-over lattice of repeating motifs. The lattice usually frames small diamond or octagonal motifs repeated across the whole field, a layout from the Bokhara family of designs, which draws on Turkmen rugs.
Pakistan is known for finely knotted wool rugs in classic designs such as Bokhara and Jaldar. Hand-knotted rug making grew rapidly in Pakistan after independence in 1947, with Lahore among the early centres.
How a sea blue Jaldar rug is made
Our records note vegetable dyes. Natural dyes give gentle changes of shade across a field, and these are valued as a sign of handwork rather than a fault.
Crisp, even motifs and sharp outlines are a sign of careful knotting, and the gul outlines here are sharp. Many Pakistani rugs are washed after weaving, which gives the wool a soft sheen and a gentle feel.
Sizing it for your room
At 308 x 201 cm the rug covers about 6.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 44 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six seats has about 64 cm of rug at each end and 56 cm along each side.
This sea blue Jaldar rug suits living rooms with pale floors and a neutral palette, where its blue stands out against cream or grey furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Under a dining table, a sea blue Jaldar rug sees chairs slide across it, so vacuum more often and lift the chairs rather than dragging them.
