Gabbeh Rugs
Gabbeh rugs come from a nomadic weaving tradition: a thick, soft pile, open fields of colour and simple motifs, sometimes small figures or animals. That simplicity makes a Gabbeh easy to place in a modern room. Our Gabbeh rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan.
Where Gabbeh rugs come from
The Gabbeh is a rug of the tribes of the Zagros mountains in Iran, including the Lori and Qashqai, who wove thick, simple rugs mainly for their own households. The name is often translated as raw or natural, which suits the look: deep pile, open fields of colour and only a few motifs. Weavers in Afghanistan now make Gabbeh rugs in the same spirit.
What to look for
- Pile. A thick, soft pile that feels generous underfoot.
- Design. Large areas of plain or softly varied colour, sometimes with small figures, animals or trees.
- Colour. Natural and vegetable-dyed wool gives gentle changes of shade across the rug.
