Green Saree Silk Rug
This green saree silk rug is a traditional style piece made in India from saree silk, measuring 396 x 296 cm. Its grey green field is covered in small flowers and curling stems in blue, purple and rust, framed by wide rose and gold borders, so the green saree silk rug shows both calm colour and a lot of pattern.
The design up close
The centre field carries a fine, all-over pattern in rows. Medallions made of small flowers stack down the length of the field, and each one holds smaller motifs in blue, purple and rust. A thin inner border in dark blue and cream separates the field from the outer borders, and a row of small cream and blue motifs sits between that border and the rose band beyond it.
The main border is wide and warm. A rose ground carries vines, leaves and small flowers in gold, orange and cream. Fringe finishes both short ends. Because the field is quieter than the border, the green saree silk rug works as a central piece in a room with plain walls.
Indian weaving and saree silk
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Alongside contemporary work, Indian workshops weave classic patterns in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Our records note vegetable dyes. Saree silk is a silk fibre, so it needs the same gentle care as any silk rug. The colours sit close together in soft tones, so the blue, purple and rust read as one mixed texture across the field.
Where this green saree silk rug suits
Grey green and rose sit well with plain walls, pale timber and cream or taupe sofas. The gold and orange border adds warmth to a room with pale furniture, and warm brass or wood lamps pick up the same tones. A living room or dining room suits it well. Pair it with plain cushions in cream or taupe so the pattern stays the focus.
Sizing it for your room
At 396 x 296 cm the green saree silk rug covers about 11.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 90 cm of rug showing past each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on the rug beside it. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 78 cm at each end and 98 cm along each side. A green saree silk rug this size suits a living room where the sofa faces its longer side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, so it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Lift the furniture now and then so the rug does not sit in one spot for long.
