Cream Diamond Design Rug
This cream diamond design rug is hand knotted in wool and was made in India. It measures 427 x 299 cm, about 12.8 square metres, and is set in a fine all-over grid of cream motifs inside taupe diamonds, on a blue-grey ground.
The design of this cream diamond design rug
The rug is laid out as a grid of diamonds. Taupe brown lines form the diamonds, and each diamond holds a cream motif with a fleur-de-lys look: a central spike with curling side petals and a small base. The motifs sit in straight rows and columns, repeated at the same spacing across the whole field.
The ground is a blue-grey that is lighter in places, with fine streaks running through it. The cream motifs stand out clearly against it, so the pattern reads from across a room. Up close, the motifs show more detail and the taupe lines turn out to be a series of linked shapes.
Because the diamonds are the same size all over, this cream diamond design rug reads as an even pattern rather than a central medallion. The grid carries right to the edges, and a short fringe finishes each end. The cream diamond design rug suits a room where a calm, all-over pattern is wanted.
Where it is made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian workshops weave many modern designs, often to order, and our Indian rugs lean towards contemporary pieces, though classic patterns also appear in the range. Our records note German dyes for this cream diamond design rug.
Wool and everyday care
The title names wool, and wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs. Because this rug is made in wool, the moth advice in the care section below applies, and the pale motifs show dust more readily than the taupe lines, so vacuum the whole surface regularly.
Bring the size and colours of your room, and we can talk through how the cream and blue-grey will sit with your furniture.
Sizing it for your room
At 427 x 299 cm this cream diamond design rug covers about 12.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 104 cm of rug showing past each end, so a full lounge setting can sit on it.
In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves about 94 cm of rug at each end and about 100 cm along each side, which suits an eight-seat table.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
