About this rug

Terracotta Transitional Rug

This terracotta transitional rug was hand knotted in India in wool and bamboo silk. Its warm, earthy field carries a pale ivory design, so it reads as a quiet base with traditional drawing on top. The size can be confirmed in our showroom.

The design up close

The field of this terracotta transitional rug is covered in ivory flower heads, palmettes and curling vines. A large flower medallion sits at the centre, with a smaller medallion stacked below it and a pale flower head at the lower end of the centre line. Pairs of flower heads sit to either side of the centre, and the spaces between them are filled with buds and small rosettes.

The outer border carries a band of ivory vine scrolls and leaves, set between a row of small diamond rosettes along the outer edge. Inside it, a narrow stripe of dots separates the border from the field. Each corner of the field holds a small ivory motif, so the pattern turns neatly at the ends.

Across this terracotta transitional rug, the ivory drawing is fine and close, so the rug reads as one pattern from a distance and as separate flowers up close.

India and its weaving

Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India, and Indian workshops weave a wide range of designs. Wool is the most common pile. Some rugs mix wool with silk, and some use bamboo silk, a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose with a silk-like sheen.

Bamboo silk has a silk-like sheen, but it is softer and less resilient than wool, so a rug with bamboo silk suits rooms with lighter foot traffic.

How this rug is made

Hand knotting builds this terracotta transitional rug one knot at a time on a loom. Wool gives the pile its body, and the bamboo silk adds a soft, elegant sheen over the design.

Sizing this terracotta transitional rug for your room

The size can be confirmed in our showroom, where we can lay it beside your furniture before you decide. A living room suits a rug like this when the sofa and armchairs can sit on it or around it, with the front legs resting on the rug. In a dining room, leave space for the chairs to slide back without the legs catching on the edge.

Terracotta sits well with timber floors and cream or ivory walls, and the ivory drawing ties in with white or grey furniture. In a bedroom, a terracotta transitional rug beside the bed gives warmth underfoot without competing with the bedding.

Looking after your rug

Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.

Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.

They have an in home service bringing carpets and rugs to you which is amazing. plus, Michael rose to the challenge of turning on old worn stairwell into a jewellery box with Persian carpet. An extensive selection of beautiful and reasonably priced rugs but what sets Sarabi apart is their wonderful customer service. Nothing is too much trouble to ensure that you are 101% delighted with your rug and how it is installed in your home. I can highly recommend Sarabi Fine Rugs.

I recently bought two rugs for my living room and dining room and had an excellent experience. The store has a fantastic range of high-quality rugs in various sizes. Michael was incredibly patient, spending over an hour helping me choose. He even brought eight selected rugs to my home so I could see how they looked before making my final decision. Michael is professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about helping customers make the right choice. The entire buying experience was enjoyable, and I highly recommend both the store and Michael for their outstanding service.

Michael went through a pile of rugs to show us and went to a lot of trouble to make sure we saw all the rugs in our size and colours that we were looking for. We selected a number of rugs which Michael brought to our home for us to choose the one that suited the area. They even moved the furniture so we could find the rug that we ended up choosing. I can thoroughly recommend Sara's Fine Rugs for excellent service, high quality rugs and their attitude to Customer Service is second to none.

We had an excellent experience with Sarabi's rugs. we dealt with Michael who is knowledgeable, engaging and very helpful without being pushy. Michael helped us choose a number of rugs and then came to our house for a fitting, to see if it worked well in our home. Michael has endless patience and knowledge. This is not the first time we have bought a carpet from Michael. I have dealt with a few other carpet businesses, and this is by far the best experience we have had. His prices and quality are very good. I will not bother going to anyone else in the future. Regards Doc

Purchased two rugs from Sarabi’s today and my husband and I enjoy both the product and experience very much. After shopping around for rugs, I can say it was hard to find another place who offers what Sarabi’s does. They carry great variety of design, sizes and materials, but one thing in common is that all their rugs are of superior quality. Michael and the team provided spectacular service from start to end. We walked into Sarabi’s not expecting much but were treated to the wonderful world of rugs. Michael spent a great deal of time educating us about rugs, materials and weaving. Then brought a couple of rugs to trial in our home as part of their service. This really helped with making our decision. Mike and team would switch out each rug and lay it out for us to see against our space, and what we found was that rugs we loved in the store ended up looking different in the actual space. This allowed us to pick one we loved with certainty. Overall, highly recommend purchasing your rug with Sarabi’s!!! Looking forward to our next visit.

Exceptional service from start to finish.Michale and his team brought over a dozen rugs from their showroom for a home trial, laying each one out in the actual space so we could see it under real light, against real furniture. Every rug is heavy, and the team worked tirelessly, swapping them out one by one without a hint of complaint, until we found the perfect match. That level of dedication and “whatever it takes” attitude is rare these days. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to get it right the first time, true craftsmanship and genuine care for the client’s outcome.

Michael and Miguel shared so much of their time and muscles to make sure we got the perfect rug for us. There was no hesitation to show us everything that might fit our brief. We bought 2 stunning rugs that will live on in our family for many years to come. We also had a hall runner that we have had for many years cleaned, again Michel collected it from our home and returned same, looks like new. Well done boys and thanks also to your Dad for holding the fort whilst you were out with us. Sylvia & Richard Gregory
