Rust Black Transitional Rug
This rust black transitional rug is a transitional area rug made in India from wool and silk, measuring 369 x 285 cm. Its field is a distressed mix of black, charcoal, gold and tan, with an octagonal medallion at the centre. Our records note German dyes.
The design up close
An octagonal medallion sits at the centre of the field, outlined with a dark banded edge and filled with gold and tan. Below it, a narrower panel of the same gold tones hangs down the middle, and faint scrolls show through the worn patches around the medallion.
Black and charcoal streaks run down in vertical drips across the field, broken up by patches of grey and beige. The dark areas are densest at the top right and along the left side, while gold and tan patches show more on the lower left. The worn, streaked surface gives this rust black transitional rug its character, with a traditional medallion set inside an abstract wash.
The border is a wide band of small rosettes and geometric ornaments in dark tones and gold, with a narrower guard band inside it and a thin outer edge. The rosettes repeat around the whole rug, and the border frames the worn field without competing with it.
Indian weaving and wool and silk
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes.
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and some mix wool with silk. Silk adds a sheen to the wool, and it shows most where the light lands on the gold tones.
Wool and silk in a rust black transitional rug
This rust black transitional rug is made from wool and silk, and the two fibres give the surface a mix of matt and sheen. The gold and tan areas show the sheen most, while the black and charcoal streaks look softer and more matt.
Sizing it for your room
At 369 x 285 cm, this rust black transitional rug covers about 10.5 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m, it runs about 75 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 65 cm at each end and about 93 cm along each side. A 369 x 285 rug in these dark and gold tones suits a living room with cream or pale grey walls, where the medallion can sit in the middle of the room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Rubbing spills can dull silk, and it needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
