Teal Tapestry Hall Runner
This teal tapestry hall runner was made in India in wool and measures 309 x 81 cm, about 2.5 square metres. Teal, petrol blue and sage run down its length in bands, with cream motifs repeating along the centre, so the runner reads as a long, calm strip.
The design of this teal tapestry hall runner
Each repeat holds a pair of cream shapes, rounded at the top and pointed below, with a small cream diamond between them. Above and below each pair, sage and cream star-like shapes and small diamonds break up the longer blue sections, so the design reads as a column of repeating units.
The colour shifts from deep teal near the ends to a lighter blue-green in the middle, and the ground is mottled with fine streaks of blue, teal and green. Nothing is contrasted sharply, so the colours blend into one soft band from a distance. Seen up close, this teal tapestry hall runner shows its cream motifs most clearly.
The runner has a short fringe at each end, and the pattern runs right up to it. The cream motifs give the teal and sage a lighter edge at each repeat, which keeps the runner from looking heavy in a narrow space.
Pale cream motifs repeat down the centre of this teal tapestry hall runner in a single column, and a narrow band of the same cream edges both long sides.
Where it is made
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and Bhadohi and Mirzapur is the largest carpet-making region in India.
Indian workshops weave many modern designs in a wide range of sizes, and a runner like this one shows that range. Our records note vegetable dyes for this teal tapestry hall runner.
Wool in a runner
The title names wool, and the category lists lamb’s wool. Lamb’s wool comes from a young sheep’s first shearing and gives the pile a soft hand, which suits a surface that is walked on every day.
Hallways get the most foot traffic, so turn the runner end to end every six to twelve months, and keep a doormat at each entry to catch grit before it reaches the pile.
Sizing it for your room
At 309 x 81 cm, this teal tapestry hall runner covers about 2.5 square metres and suits a hallway or a kitchen galley. The runner is 81 cm wide, so a hallway about 1 m to 1.2 m wide leaves roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side.
Its length of about 3.1 m suits a hallway that is a little longer than that, with floor showing at each end. The teal and cream sit well with white walls and pale timber.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum this runner on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the surface. Turn it around every six to twelve months so foot traffic wears it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the runner sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, so vacuum the areas under furniture often and lift the furniture now and then.
