Teal Blueprint Wool Rug
This teal blueprint wool rug was made in India and measures 366 x 244 cm. Its field is a deep teal blue crossed by fine pale lines, and it sits in our contemporary range.
The design up close
Fine pale lines form stepped, hooked and diamond shapes across the rug, close together and drawn with a crisp edge, so the pattern looks like a plan sketched in pale line on dark paper. The teal shifts from an almost navy blue along the top and lower edges to a lighter, greyer teal through the centre band.
The motifs repeat over the whole field with no central medallion and no separate border, so the pattern reads as one continuous design. On this teal blueprint wool rug the pale lines are the lightest tones, and the deeper teal ground keeps them calm. Short fringe finishes both short ends.
Warm timber, cream and charcoal furnishings sit well against the cool teal, and the strong contrast of the pale lines keeps the rug visible from across a room. A room with grey upholstery and plain walls lets the drawing do the work, while a richer rug in rust would pull against the blue.
Where Indian rugs come from
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and its weaving centres include Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century, and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs in a wide range of colours and sizes, and this rug sits firmly in that modern style.
How the rug is made
This teal blueprint wool rug is hand knotted in India, with each knot tied by hand on a loom, row after row. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and this rug is wool throughout. Once the knots are tied, the pile is sheared level.
Sizing a teal blueprint wool rug for your room
At 366 x 244 cm the rug covers about 8.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 73 cm of rug past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, this teal blueprint wool rug leaves roughly 93 cm at each end and 77 cm along each side. Its teal and grey tones suit timber floors, grey walls and neutral furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath this teal blueprint wool rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
