Abstract Wool and Silk Rug
This abstract wool and silk rug was handmade in India from a blend of wool and silk. Golds, soft pinks, pale blues and muted purples break across a grey and white ground, and the colours suit the name Sunset: warm gold beside cool blue and plum. The size can be confirmed in our showroom.
The design up close
Nothing repeats across this abstract wool and silk rug. Broad bands of mustard gold run across the top left and along the lower right, and a darker plum wash sits at the top centre. A pale grey field fills the middle, flecked with white where the ground looks lighter.
Lower down, pale blue and soft pink patches spread across the left and centre, and mustard gold fills the right-hand side. Pink and gold edge the lower left, where the colours run close to the edge. Toward the right side the gold is broader and warmer than the pale blue on the left.
Across this abstract wool and silk rug, warm gold and cool blue sit side by side, so no single colour takes over. The surface looks brushed and layered, and its raised and cut pile areas give it depth.
Indian workshops and their wool and silk
Indian workshops weave a wide range of designs, including many modern and abstract pieces, often to order. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and some rugs mix wool with silk. Bhadohi and Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh is the largest carpet-making region in India.

Our records note the Nepali knot in this abstract wool and silk rug. The wool and silk together give the pile a soft, lustrous finish, and the raised and cut pile areas add depth where the colours change. Light falls differently on the raised and cut areas, so the same patch can look lighter or darker from one side of the room.
Sizing this abstract wool and silk rug
The size can be confirmed in our showroom, where you can see the gold and blue against your own floor and walls. The field is busy and mixes warm and cool shades, so it suits a plain room with neutral furniture, letting the rug carry the colour. A living room with cream or grey furniture lets the gold come forward. In a bedroom, white bedding keeps the pattern from crowding the room. A bright room with white walls picks up the gold and blue tones, while a darker room lets the plum and grey come forward.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. Rubbing spills can dull silk, and this abstract wool and silk rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
