Sky Blue Contemporary Rug
This sky blue contemporary rug was double hand knotted in India from New Zealand wool and measures 365 x 273 cm. A clear, bright blue covers most of the field, softening to a grey-blue band across the middle, with fine white flecks throughout and fringe along the bottom edge. It has no border and no motif, so the colour is the whole design.
The design up close
The top third is a vivid mid blue with a touch of turquoise. Toward the centre the blue dims into a greyer tone that runs across the rug in a broad band, and below it the bright blue returns and holds down to the fringed bottom edge. The change is gradual, with no hard line between the shades.
Fine horizontal streaks run through this sky blue contemporary rug, made from several shades of blue, grey and white yarn. The surface looks textured from a distance and shifts a little with the light. The plain edges let the streaks run right to the short ends, so the blue reads as one wide field. The fringe is longest along the bottom edge, and the top edge carries only a short fringe.
India and its rugs
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Indian workshops weave many contemporary and modern designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile. Our Indian collection leans towards contemporary pieces, including blue contemporary rugs like this one, alongside classic patterns. If you are choosing between blues, we are happy to lay several rugs side by side in the showroom.
How it is made
Our records note vegetable dyes. This sky blue contemporary rug is double hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on the loom. The streaks of several blues and greys are part of the pile itself.
Sizing this sky blue contemporary rug for your room
At 365 x 273 cm the rug covers about 10.0 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, it runs roughly 73 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 63 cm at each end and 87 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back.
This sky blue contemporary rug suits white walls, timber floors and grey or white furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
