Silver Grey Contemporary Rug
This silver grey contemporary rug was hand knotted in India from wool and measures 299 x 244 cm, or about 7.3 square metres. Its surface is a plain smoky grey with a soft blue tint, and fine horizontal texture runs across it, so the rug reads as one quiet colour from a distance. It is double hand knotted, and our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The field has no motif. Faint horizontal bands of finer texture cross the pile, and lighter and darker grey strokes run in streaks from the top edge to the bottom. Near the top and in the lower part, narrow rows of small textured dashes sit within the field, which adds a fine woven rhythm to the surface.
The colour shifts across the rug. The top is a touch darker in places, and the centre is paler and cooler, with blue grey tones showing through the smoky base. With no border or edge pattern, this silver grey contemporary rug runs to every edge. The texture is most visible where light falls across the rug at a low angle, so the surface seems to change through the day.
Agra and Indian rugs
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, and Agra has been a carpet-weaving centre since at least the 17th century. This rug was made in Agra. The Bhadohi and Mirzapur area, also in Uttar Pradesh, is the largest carpet-making region in India. Indian workshops weave many designer rugs in modern and abstract styles, often to order, and a plain grey design like this one fits that contemporary range. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs.
Sizing your silver grey contemporary rug
At 299 x 244 cm this silver grey contemporary rug covers about 7.3 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m sits fully on it with roughly 40 cm of rug past each end. A dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, for six, leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and 77 cm along each side. A dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, for eight, leaves about 30 cm at each end and 72 cm along each side.
This rug suits pale timber, white walls and charcoal or blue furniture. Its plain surface lets cushions, art and lamps take the colour in the room. Corner to corner, the rug measures about 3.9 metres, and it has no motif to compete with a patterned sofa or artwork.
Looking after your silver grey contemporary rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
