Silver Gold Vase Design Rug
This silver gold vase design rug was double knotted by hand in India from wool, and it measures 423 x 306 cm. A soft blue-grey field carries gold and cream motifs in loose rows, with a border of thin gold lines and scrolls framing the edge. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
Most of the design is worked in gold on the grey ground. Square and round medallion shapes sit in rows across the upper field, some outlined in gold and others filled with a faded cream. Tall vase-shaped motifs appear near the centre, with small sprigs and blossoms filling the spaces between them.
The border is set in from the edge and built from narrow gold lines with small scrolls between them. A second line marks the outer edge of the field, so the design sits inside a clear frame. On this silver gold vase design rug the gold has worn to a soft, faded tone in many places, and the pattern breaks into small marks where the wear is heaviest.
Across the field the rows are evenly spaced, so the motifs read as a regular grid rather than a scatter. Towards the lower part of the rug the gold motifs thin out and more grey shows, which gives the bottom half a calmer look.
Indian rugs and their weaving
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian rugs in our collection lean towards contemporary and designer pieces, alongside classic patterns. This rug sits in our transitional range, which blends classic motifs with a modern palette.
Wool and double knotting
This silver gold vase design rug is double knotted by hand, so each knot is tied on a loom and the pile is sheared to an even height. Turn it over to see the reverse of the design, where the small irregularities of hand knotting show. The pile is wool, so the care advice below applies.
Sizing a silver gold vase design rug
At 423 x 306 cm the rug covers about 12.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves about 102 cm of rug showing past each end, so a full lounge setting with sofa, armchairs and coffee table can sit on it. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 92 cm of rug at each end and 103 cm along each side. A silver gold vase design rug this size suits a large living room with neutral walls. Its soft grey also suits a room with cream or white walls.
Looking after your silver gold vase design rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
