Handmade Silver and Charcoal Grass Rug
The Pewter rug is a silver and charcoal grass rug, handmade in India from wool and bamboo silk and measuring 310 x 248 cm. That is about 7.7 square metres of floor.
The design up close
Silver grey fills this silver and charcoal grass rug, with a small charcoal pattern of dots, open circles and tiny crosses set in rows across the whole field.
Faint horizontal bands run across the width. Some are a little paler, and in others the pile lies in a slanted, herringbone like line, which gives the grass look. The tone changes gently from band to band, so the grey looks softly washed from a distance.
There is no border, and both ends finish in an ivory fringe. The cool grey suits white, black and timber interiors, and it sits well under a glass or stone table.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres, as this one does.
How this silver and charcoal grass rug is made
This modern rug is handmade from wool and bamboo silk. Wool gives the pile its body. It is hard wearing, springy and matte. Bamboo silk is a viscose (rayon) fibre made from bamboo cellulose, with a silk-like sheen. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so a rug with it suits rooms with lighter foot traffic.
Lighter strands give the silver a soft gleam in places, which shifts as you walk past, while the charcoal marks stay matte and sharp. It is a calm bamboo silk rug that pairs easily with other contemporary style rugs.
Sizing it for your room
This silver and charcoal grass rug suits a living room, a dining room or a main bedroom. In a bedroom, a queen bed (153 cm wide) set across the 248 cm width leaves 47.5 cm of rug each side, and a king bed (183 cm) leaves 32.5 cm each side, enough to step onto something soft in the morning.
In a living room, a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m placed along the 310 cm length leaves about 45 cm at each end. Under a dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 65 cm at each end and 79 cm along each side, so chairs can stay on the rug when pulled out a little. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 35 cm at each end and 74 cm along each side.
Looking after your silver and charcoal grass rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull bamboo silk, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
