Silver Abstract Wool Rug
This silver abstract wool rug is a hand knotted piece made in India from New Zealand wool, measuring 419 x 305 cm. Patches of silver grey, charcoal, cream and taupe spread across the field, with teal grey tints in places, so the silver abstract wool rug looks weathered, almost like worn stone.
The design up close
Dark charcoal blotches cluster on the left and in the upper centre, breaking into small fragments that spread toward the edges. Cream and ivory patches sit through the centre and lower middle, with sandy taupe beneath them. The right edge is softer, a pale silver grey with fine dark marks in the middle right.
Teal and blue grey tints show in the lower left and along the lower right, which keeps the rug from looking flat. Fine streaks run through several areas, so the surface has a brushed look that changes as the light moves. The silver abstract wool rug has no border, so the whole rug reads as one continuous field. Seen from a distance, the marks gather into a loose, cloud-like shape in the centre, and the edges fade into a lighter grey. The darkest blotches are closest to the left edge and spread less as they move right.
Indian weaving and this silver abstract wool rug
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. It belongs to that contemporary group, and it sits well in a room with simple, contemporary furniture.
Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and this one is made from New Zealand wool. Our records note vegetable dyes. The colours sit close together, so the grey, cream and taupe blend into one another across the field.
Where this rug suits
Silver grey and cream suit a room with pale walls, light timber or grey linen. The darker charcoal patches give a plain room some depth, so a rug like this works well as the one strong pattern in a space with simple furniture. Pale timber or a light grey sofa keeps the room bright, and a few charcoal cushions link the silver abstract wool rug to the furniture.
Sizing it for your room
At 419 x 305 cm the silver abstract wool rug covers about 12.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves roughly 100 cm of rug showing past each end, enough for the front legs of armchairs to rest on it. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 90 cm at each end and about 102 cm along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
