Handmade Sage and Camel Abstract Rug
The Sage Meadow rug is a sage and camel abstract rug, handmade in India from wool and measuring 305 x 246 cm. This wool rug covers about 7.5 square metres, a good size for a living room.
The design up close
The field reads like an old wall where paint has worn back in patches. Pale ivory and soft grey open up the surface, and over them sit broad, ragged shapes of sage green, slate blue, camel and a greyish taupe. Small flecks of mustard and rust show through in a few places.
Nothing repeats. The shapes have soft, broken edges, and many of them drift in long vertical streaks, so the rug looks brushed rather than printed. Up close you see that each colour is made of many slightly different shades side by side, which keeps the large green and blue areas from looking flat.
There is no border. The pattern runs right to the bound sides, and the two ends finish in a short ivory fringe. The pile is cut low and even, so the colours stay crisp from across the room. If you want a modern rug with colour but no hard lines, this sage and camel abstract rug is a gentle choice.
Indian weaving and this rug
India has a long rug weaving tradition, with centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs, often to order, in a wide range of colours and sizes. Wool is the most common pile, and some rugs mix wool with other fibres.
How this sage and camel abstract rug is made
The pile is all wool, which is hard wearing, springy and matte. Wool takes colour well, and the sage, blue and camel sit side by side without one outshining the rest.
Because the surface is matte, the rug looks much the same from every side of the room, with no strong change of shade when you walk around it. As a wool rug it also springs back after it has been walked on, so the low pile stays even in a family living room or under a dining table that gets daily use.
Sizing it for your room
At 305 x 246 cm it is a generous size for a living room. In front of a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, laid lengthways, it runs past the sofa by 42.5 cm each side, so the coffee table sits on it.
Under a bed, lay the long side across the bed. A queen bed at 153 cm wide leaves 76 cm each side, and a king at 183 cm leaves 61 cm each side, so you step out onto wool. Under a 180 x 90 cm table for six it gives 62.5 cm each end and 78 cm each side. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight also fits, with 32.5 cm at each end and 73 cm along each side.
Looking after your sage and camel abstract rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
