Rust Silver Patterned Rug
This rust silver patterned rug was hand double knotted in India from New Zealand wool and measures 310 x 241 cm, which gives it about 7.5 square metres of floor. The rust field carries a pale silver white vine design, laid out in a symmetrical pattern of medallions and rosettes. A border of the same pale tone frames the field, so the light motifs stand out clearly from the warm ground.
The design up close
The field is laid out in columns. A large rosette sits at the centre of each column, with a smaller motif above and below it, and palmette shapes on curling stems fill the spaces between. The motifs are pale silver white on rust, and the stems wind between them so the field reads as one continuous vine.
Between the central medallions, small star shapes and a few round blossoms scatter across this rust silver patterned rug. The ground has a fine, even texture, so the pale motifs read clearly from across the room.
The border has two parts. The outer band carries a vine with small diamond rosettes in the pale tone, and an inner band has a row of small dots and motifs between narrow lines. Fringe shows at the top and bottom edges.
Indian rugs and where they are woven
India has a long hand-knotted rug tradition, with weaving centres including Agra and the Bhadohi and Mirzapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Wool is the most common pile in Indian rugs, and Indian workshops weave many modern and abstract designs in a wide range of colours and sizes. The layout of vines and medallions on this rug is a classic one, and it sits well in a traditional room.
How this rust silver patterned rug is made
This rust silver patterned rug is hand double knotted from New Zealand wool. The rug is hard wearing, and its pale motifs are worked into the same knotted pile as the rust ground, so the two colours share one surface.
Sizing a rust silver patterned rug for your room
At 310 x 241 cm this rust silver patterned rug suits a living room with a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m. The sofa leaves roughly 45 cm of rug at each end. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which seats six, the rug leaves about 65 cm at each end and 76 cm along each side. Its rust ground suits light floors and dark floors alike, and the pale motifs stand out on either.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
